Killer Termites in the Shed

I tweeted last week that we had commenced the repairs and renovation of the shed into what will become guest accommodation and the kids playroom, seemingly a relatively simple project, that was until we discovered the sneaky little mongrels in the timber, Termites had complete infested the frame.  Although there was not sight of any live ones there damage was plain to see once we had removed the interior lining.

Now this was a major blow to my simple plan of tidying up the shed with an easy renovation.

Now it looks like I’ll have to organise to remove all the old fibro, repair the frames and ensure its structurally sound before recladding and improving the interior.

Have a look at the pictures to see the damage these little ants have created.

During the past few days I have researched some of the different options available and have developed a plan based on this particular situation.

A summary of the analysis on my situation.

  1. The roof joists and frame are untouched and intact
  2. 30-40% of the wall studs are damaged
  3. The base and top plates are damaged

Firstly I will be getting a pest controller in to inspect not only the timber in the shed but also the house as the last thing I would like is for any live termites to commence eating the frame on the house, causing a much bigger problem.

Secondly install temporary structural support to hold up the roof and take stress away from the walls.

Third remove and rebuild new framing for the room and install Ant capping and other termite traps.

Well they say renovation like life is an adventure and that under every disaster lies a new opportunity. Well, we’ll see what opportunity lies under this mess of ants that killed my thoughts of a simple job.
