The Right Colour for your Home

When it comes to decorating, choosing the right paint colour for you can be a real challenge. While you may feel that there are so many choices you’re bound to find the right one, you may end up feeling that there are so many choices you don’t know where to start!

The colours you use in a room and for that matter your whole house set the mood. The colour you choose is really about what you want a room to feel like. The pictures below start to describe this.

Having said that, at the end of the day colour is a very personal thing and many websites offer quick questionaires that can help you determine colours that most suit you.  They help you determine your colour personality they will talk about warm and cool colours, dramatic and relaxed colours however at the end of the day they will provide you with a little insight into colours you naturally feel comfortable with.

This type of service will assist you in reducing the range of colour you need to look at as the range of colours offered by paint companies is almost unlimited and can be completely overwhelming.

What I can offer here is to keep the number of different colours in your home to a minimum, if you choose completely different colour palettes for each room it will appear disjointed and inconsistent throughout the home. By this I also don’t mean only use one colour what I would propose is to select a theme for the whole house then use variants of that in each room.  As an example we are using Antique USA white as our base colour throughout the main living areas of the house.  The trims in gloss white.

To extend this into the bedrooms we are continuing with the gloss white trim and using Antique USA white above our picture rails. The main bedroom colours are then chosen from a palette that complements these 2 main colours. We’re then further tying in the theme by using colours in our furniture, rugs and wall art.

Selecting your colours is usually a process not a 1 off event.  As such here are some things we did to narrow down our selection.

  1. Browse Magazines.
  2. Took pictures of colour schemes we liked
  3. Asked questions at the local paint shop and picked up colour swatches.
  4. Used sample pots to test colours we liked
  5. Selected complementary colours to the ones we liked

As a start here are some links to different colour schemes that I found useful in providing new ideas on colours

Remember at the end of the day the important thing when painting your home is that you and your family like it and it makes the house feel more comfortable.  If it doesnt work you can always paint over it, that’s the great thing about painting in a weekend it can be changed.
